“We Are the World” Volverá a grabarse en beneficio de las vicimas del terremoto de Haití
En este mes se grabará de nuevo la canción que Michael Jackson y Lionel Richie escribieron en 1985, esta vez en beneficio de las vctimas de Haití. Lionel Richie y Quincey Jones, lo habían previsto para al cumplirse el 25 aniversario de aquella grabación, pero tras la tragedía sufrida por este país, han decidido destinar sus beneficios como hemos dicho a los que han sufrifo tan tremenda tragedia.
Parece asegurada la participación de Usher, Natalie Cole y John Legend y suenan nombres como Sting, Fergie, Alicia Keys o Justin Timberlake entre los posibles colaboradores. No faltará Lionel Richie ni la voz de Michael Jackson, que la había vuelto a interpretar l para su gira “This Is It” poco antes de su muerte el pasado 25 de junio.
Michael Jackson y Lionel Richie escribieron en 1985 la canción “We Are the World” (Somos el mundo), fue grabada por un enorme grupo formado por los mejores y más famosos cantantes y músicos americanos, reunidos para mediante ella recaudar fondos para la campaña que se denominó “USA for Africa” (United Support of Artists for Africa), fue el 28 de enero y todos los beneficios se donaron para dicha campaña humanitaria intentando paliar la “hambruna en Etiopía, salió a la venta el 7 de marzo.
Participaron entre otros: Harry Belafonte, Ray Charles, Quincy Jones, Kenny Rogers, Lionel Richie, Diana Ross, Paul Simon, Michael Jackson, Huey Lewis, Tina Turner, Billy Joel, Dionne Warwick, Cyndi Lauper, Steve Perry, Bob Dylan y Bruce Springsteen. En el coro, actuaron todos los componentes de The Jackson Five.
La canción ganó los premios Grammy de Canción del año, Disco del año y Mejor actuación de un grupo Pop.
Solo en los Estados Unidos de America, el sencillo vendió 7 millones y medio de copias. Más tarde fue incluida en un álbum musical, llamado “We Are the World”, del que se vendieron más de 3 millones de copias. Así mismo “We Are the World”, el álbum, incluyó canciones de Prince (que había rechazado participar en la grabación), Bruce Springsteen, Tina Turner y otros artistas, y la canción Tears “Are not enough” fruto de una iniciativa similar en Canadá.
“Los beneficios conjuntos del sencillo, el álbum, el videoclip y Merchandising relacionado con la canción We Are the World superaron la cifra de 50 millones de dólares”.
Algunos meses más tarde, se celebraron en EE.UU. y Reino Unido dos conciertos simultáneos, “Live Aid”, con identícos fines benéficos-
